Biography

   Thomas Horter is a highly accomplished flute performer, teacher, and repair technician based in Austin, Texas. With a deep passion for music, Thomas currently holds the prestigious position of principal flutist in the Williamson County Symphony Orchestra. He has established himself as a prominent figure in the Central Texas flute community and is revered for his exceptional talent and dedication.

   Thomas's musical journey took him to the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in the Netherlands, where he was recognized as a "Talent Grant" student. Under the guidance of his esteemed teachers, Thomas honed his skills and developed a versatile repertoire. He has performed a wide range of musical works, spanning from the enchanting compositions of John Dowland to the contemporary creations of Maurizio Pisati. Whether performing as a soloist, in chamber ensembles, or as part of orchestral settings, Thomas has graced prestigious venues worldwide. From the 89.5 KMFA Draylen Mason Music Studio in Austin to the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam, and even the Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali in Reggio Emilia, Italy, his performances have captivated audiences across the globe.

   In recognition of his exceptional talent, Thomas has garnered numerous accolades. In the spring of 2023, he was honored with a gold prize from the Universal Stars Music Competition, a testament to his remarkable skill and artistry. Additionally, he achieved 1st Prize in the Baroque Music Category from the esteemed Bach and Vivaldi International Music Competitions, further solidifying his reputation as an outstanding baroque flutist. That summer he won 1st prize at the Fanny Mendelsohn and the Gabriel Fauré International Competitions. 

   Throughout his musical journey, Thomas has had the privilege of learning from a diverse array of world-class teachers. These mentors, hailing from international backgrounds, have performed with top orchestras and conductors across the globe. Notable among them are Marieke Schneemann, Kersten McCall, Vincent Cortvrint, Harrie Starreveld, Marten Root, Aysha Wills, Terri Sundberg, Jan Crisanti, LeeAnne Thompson, and Christina Jennings. The wisdom and guidance imparted by these exceptional teachers have shaped Thomas into the accomplished musician he is today.

   In addition to his performing career, Thomas is also deeply committed to music education. He shares his expertise and passion for flute playing with students at Cedar Valley Middle School (Round Rock ISD). Through his teaching, Thomas inspires and nurtures the next generation of flutists, imparting his technical mastery and musicality to aspiring young musicians.

   Beyond his performance and teaching career, Thomas excels as a flute repair technician. His expertise in flute repair is evident through his extensive experience and training in the field. Having studied under Jon Landell at the Vermont Guild of Flute-Making and refined his skills at the FluteLab in the Netherlands under the guidance of Maarten Visser, Thomas has the skill to bring flutes back to life using high-quality tools and materials. His dedication to his craft and commitment to providing exceptional flute repair services make him a reliable and skilled professional in the field.
